Porta Potty Types

There are five common porta potty types: standard units, deluxe flushable units, ADA-accessible units, hand-washing stations and restroom trailers. Standard units suit job sites and big crowds, deluxe units and trailers suit weddings and upscale events, and every public event needs some ADA units.

Standard porta potty

Best for: Job sites, parks, casual events, overflow

A single-user, non-flushing unit with a holding tank, toilet seat, roof vent and a lockable door with an occupied indicator. Many models also include a urinal and a hand-sanitizer dispenser.

Ask when you call: Ask whether the unit includes a urinal or sanitizer, and how often it will be pumped and restocked.

A larger portable restroom with grey upper walls, tan lower walls, a translucent peaked roof and a roof vent, standing on a lawn in front of a tall green hedge.

Deluxe flushable unit

Best for: Backyard parties, corporate events, longer events

A roomier single-user unit with a foot-pump flush that keeps the bowl clean, and on many models a small sink or hand-wash basin inside.

Ask when you call: Confirm whether the model you are quoted has an inside sink and how its fresh-water tank is refilled.

A large light grey-blue portable restroom with a low ramp at its door, standing on an empty concrete lot in front of a tall trimmed green hedge.

ADA-accessible unit

Best for: Any public event; required share of clustered units

A larger unit with ground-level entry, a wide door, grab bars and enough interior space to turn a wheelchair. Accessible units are marked with the International Symbol of Accessibility.

Ask when you call: Tell us the surface where it will stand: accessible units need a firm, level route to the door.

A white freestanding portable hand-washing station with two round sinks, two tall faucets and two black foot pumps at its base, standing on grass.

Hand-washing station

Best for: Food service, events, job sites, petting zoos

A freestanding sink unit with a fresh-water tank, foot pumps, soap and paper-towel dispensers. Usually placed next to a row of restrooms or near food areas.

Ask when you call: Ask how many basins each station has and how much water it holds for your crowd and hours.

A white restroom trailer with two doors, each reached by short metal steps with handrails, parked on a gravel path in a garden under strings of glowing bistro lights.

Restroom trailer

Best for: Weddings, upscale events, VIP areas, long projects

A towable trailer with separate rooms, flushing toilets, running-water sinks, mirrors, lighting and climate control. Most need a level spot and a power source; some also connect to a water supply.

Ask when you call: Check the power the trailer needs, the space to tow it in and level it, and who hooks it up.
